Tussahaw

The Tussahaw (TUSS-UH-HAW) or (TUSS-EE-HAW) Community serves as the defining boundary between the McDonough and Locust Grove communities, a geographical landmark first documented on an 1821 map of Henry County. This region takes its name from the prominent Tussahaw Creek, a substantial watercourse meandering through Southern Henry County into Butts County. The term "Tussahaw" originates from the Muskogean language, with interpretations diverging; while some assert it translates to "To Inflict Pain," others argue for the more optimistic meaning of "Stream of Life."

The Tussahaw Community is adorned with numerous places of worship, each contributing to the cultural and spiritual tapestry of the area. Among these are Philippi Baptist Church, Wolf Creek Baptist Church, Union Grove Church, and Philadelphia United Methodist Church, serving as communal hubs and landmarks that anchor the community's identity.

For over a century, the Tussahaw Community has been a cherished home to families like the Baileys, Laneys, Nails, Teals, Prices, Lindseys, and Seabolts. These enduring families have cultivated roots that run deep, contributing to the community's resilience and continuity over the course of generations.
